How to Choose a Health Practitioner

I can't tell you how many stories I have heard over my 40 years of nursing and later health coaching about the fact that patients don't feel heard. So frustrating. I know I have been there. A few of the more common ones have been; He doesn't listen to me. I see a different nurse or Dr. everytime I go. They run you through the clinic like cattle. They never make eye contact, they just want to give more and more prescriptions.

Yes I would say this is a problem. But another problem I hear is, But he is so nice???? WelI I would hope so. He is working for you and it is his job to be compassionate. But if he is "so nice" and is a terrible practioner or surgeon then...........

Another problem is there are so many specialist now that finding a Dr. that treats you as a whole person is a task.

Here is my best advice for you:

Find a practioner that treats the whole person. Not just one body system. Not the Dr. that won't find the source of the problem but keeps piling on prescriptions. One that has the integrity to have a difficult conversation. Conversations about your weight problems, bad habits or your emotional health.

Look for a practioner with some of these key words: holistic, naturopathic, functional medicine. Natural alternatives. It is also a good idea to get established with this type of practitioner before you really need them. Sometimes their waiting lists are long. Especially the pediatricians.

BTW you don't have to have a pediatrician. There are many qualified family practice physicians and nurse practioners that are leaning towards more natural practice methods. This includes Dentists.
