Natural Alternative to Vicks Vapor Rub
Many over the counter chest rubs are mostly made from petroleum. The more we can avoid toxins the better off we are. Little by little toxins in everything become a big thing. It is cumulative. especially for children. Petroleum can also be irritating to the skin. So here is a great recipe for when you or your children have colds, flu or stuffy noses. This recipe can be rubbed on the chest and the bottoms of the feet before bed.
Recipe:
1/2 C Coconut oil
20 drops camphor oil
20 drops eucalyptus oil
20 drops of peppermint oil
Heat the coconut oil on the stove or allow it to sit in the sun until it is liquefied. Stir in the oils and allow to re-harden at room temperature. This mix will not lose it's potency for at least 6 months and longer if kept in the refrigerator and only take out what you need. ****For very young children it is a good idea to dilute this mixture before applying.
Instructions:
After rubbing on your chest and neck put on a high necked clean cotton t-shirt. Don't have one? Then place a handkerchief folded in a V around your neck that covers your chest---you know like a cowboy! Secure with a safety pin/diaper pin. Then put on your PJs or t-shirt.
After rubbing on your feet place a pair of cotton socks on. There are many receptor sites on the bottoms of your feet.
This technique is especially great for night time as congestion worsens when we lay down.
A mixture of the peppermint, camphor and eucalyptus can be added to a diffuser as well for congestion.
