Medicinal Teas

Let's talk about Medicinal teas. They are extremely helpful IF you do it right. Yes, you have to make the tea correctly. It isn't difficult but there are a few rules.

First, let's talk about steeping tea.

What you will need:

a 6 oz tea cup and saucer, spoon, wire mesh ball for loose leaf tea or an unbleached #1 paper tea bag. Herbal ingredients and boiling purified water-not tap water, sweetener of your choice (more on that later)

As a rule of thumb all Medicinal teas need to be steeped in order to release their healing properties.                                                                          How do you steep a tea?

Place all ingredients EXCEPT for your choice of sweetener in an 6 ounce tea cup. Add one heaping teaspoon of your tea of choice in a wire mesh or tea bag. Pour boiling water over the tea and cover the top of the cup with the saucer. Leave to steep for 6 minutes. Leave longer for stronger effect and flavor. Remove the saucer and tap the tea bag or squeeze it. Then you can add sweetener. NOT an artificial sweetener. Use only a natural one like honey, agave, or stevia. Do not add the sweetener until the tea is steeped. The sweetener affects the release of the medicinal properties of the tea. Do not add milk. That also affects the medicinal properties. Teas can be consumed hot or room temperature. Other ingredients you can add are the peels of any citrus, vanilla bean, apple peel or dark berries.

If you are pinching pennies then here is an idea. Save the tea bags of the same type of tea. Leave them open to air, like on a plate. After you have 3 of the same type then you can reuse them all together for one more cup.

Tea is much less expensive if you buy it in bulk and place it in your own wire mesh or bag.

My favorite places to buy loose leaf tea is:

Rosemary's Herb Shop and Mountain Rose Herbs. Both are on the web.
